Bertie Freeth [fh.4.6.1.2.10.13]

Bertie Freeth was the thirteenth child of John Freeth & Sarah Ann Felton christened February 4th, 1881 at West Bromwich, Staffs. Bertie was the twin brother of Lily who sadly died soon after birth.

In 1891 Bertie, his parents, brothers & sister were living at 26 Watton St, West Bromwich. Later that year Bertie’s mother died.

In 1901 Bertie was still living at home with his widowed father, 3 sisters & a brother, now at 66 Newhall St, West Bromwich. Bert (in census) was now working as a horse driver (groom).

Bertie married Sarah Ann Hodgkinson on October 10th, 1907 at Holy Trinity, West Bromwich, Staffs. Sarah Ann was born February 2nd, 1885.

In 1911 Bertie & Sarahann were living at 14 Henry St, West Bromwich & Bert was a glass cutter for a glass bottle manufacturer.

The 1939 register shows Bertie & Sarah Ann living at 7 Oak Avenue, West Bromwich & Bertie was described as a labourer.  It was noted that Sarah was an invalid.

Daughter Mary who was born in 1913 married Samuel Green in 1933. Mary, Samuel (a farmer) & their 2 children, Mary (4) & Barbara (1) emigrated to Montreal, Canada on April 8th, 1939 sailing from Liverpool.  Their address in England was given as 7 Oak Avenue, West Bromwich.

Sarah Ann died in July-September 1949 at West Bromwich.

Widowed Bertie travelled to St John, New Brunswick, Canada on January 28th, 1950.  He was listed on  the ship’s manifest as a labourer & his address was 7 Oak Avenue, West Bromwich.  He returned to England on February 7th, 1951 on the ‘Empress of France’ when he was listed as a pensioner.

On April 10th, 1951 70 year old Bertie emigrated to Canada, sailing from Liverpool to Montreal.  His home address was given as 39 Essex Avenue, Hateley Heath, West Bromwich & he was retired.

The directory for Toronto from 1952 to 1954 shows Bertie living at 352 Rhodes Ave. 

Bertie died on May 4th, 1964 in Scarborough, York, Ontario, Canada.  Administration of his estate was granted in Toronto to daughter Mary Vera Green.  He left £490 in England, sealed London February 4th, 1965.
